“Race to the Clouds” — Fast Facts to Love

• In 1987, Walter Röhrl stormed Pikes Peak in the Audi Sport quattro S1, setting a 10:47.85 overall record over ~20 km with 156 bends and 1,439 m of elevation gain; the 2.1-liter five-cylinder produced about 598 hp.

• The climb’s gravel sections and lack of guardrails in that era made it infamous; Audi’s quattro program scored a hat-trick of Pikes Peak wins (Mouton ’85, Unser ’86, Röhrl ’87).
